Foreign portfolio investors of FPIs were net buyers in India to the tune of Rs.62,951 crore in the during the month of November 2020. FPIs invested Rs.60,358 crore into equities and Rs.2,593 crore into debt taking their total net investment to Rs.62,951 crore. Incidentally, thi is historically the firmest and also most volatile stock.

Let us now look at the context. This comes on top of FPIs already infusing Rs.22,033 crore in the month of October 2020. FPIs are now buying into equity and debt as bond yields have also steadied and the government has managed to defend the currency quit well.

Most global investors have turned risk-on and see more alpha in emerging markets than in developed markets. This was largely triggered by the US election outcome but other factors like the Stimulus 3.0 and solid corporate results also helped along the way.

The inflow picture was similar for other emerging markets like Korea and Taiwan too. The biggest chunk of the investment has come into the banking sector. However, other sectors like metals and capital goods that represent the capital cycle revival also saw buying interest.
