In fact, March 2020 will perhaps go down as the one of the worst months in terms of FII selling in all of last 25 years with the FIIs selling heavily in equity and also in debt. With two days left go for the trading month of March 2020, FIIs have already withdrawn over Rs.100,000 crore. This is a big shift after they were buyers for six consecutive months. In order to contain the spread of Coronavirus, lockdowns have become a norm world over and have that has led to FIIs becoming risk-off. Till the previous week, FIIs had sold net Rs.59,377 crore in equities and Rs.52,811 crore in debt. The total net outflow stood at Rs.1,12,188 crore with two days still to go in March 2020. Going ahead, the situation does not look like it will change anytime soon as the pandemic will continue to keep FIIs on tenterhooks with respect to buying in EMs like India.
