Sounds surprising but mobile trading actually got a huge boost during the COVID-19 lockdown. You must have recently read that NSDL and CDSL reported a sharp spurt in the number of trading and demat accounts opened in April and May 2020. Within the overall trading volumes on a daily basis, the share of mobile trading saw a sharp spike in the months of April and May. While it was lower on BSE, it was much higher on the NSE. In fact, the sharer of mobile trading on NSE touched a record level of 23% share of total volumes as against just 11% in the corresponding period last year. In May 2019, mobile trading accounted for 24% of number of active clients but in May 2020, that number was up to 45%. That means most of the new customers are increasingly relying on mobile trading where a combination of smart apps and good bandwidth have made a difference.
