That is correct. In fact, if you look at the Apr-Aug, 5 months period, then Container cargo handling at the 12 major ports across India fell by 22.5% to 49.26 million tons or MT. These 12 ports account for bulk of the port volumes in India.

Compared to the current fiscal year, these ports handled nearly 63.53 MT in the corresponding period in the last fiscal year 2019-20. ICRA has estimated that general cargo throughput for the full year 2020-21 fiscal could contract by 5-8%.

It is estimated that container cargo would most likely contract by 15%. Major ports like Chennai, Cochin and Kamrajar saw their cargo volumes dip over 30% in the 5 months, while JNPT and Kolkata logged a drop of over 20%. Marmagao alone showed positive growth.

Yes. Global trade has suffered tremendously as ships are not given to anchor to goods not accepted for fear of contamination. This has boosted Air freight, but ports are definitely suffering.
