Even as the war of words continues between India and China, the Indian government has opted to play it safe with its telecom equipment purchase from China. Therefore, in a rather significant move, India now plans to block all its mobile and telecom carriers from using telecom equipment that are manufactured by Huawei of China. This embargo is proposed to be placed on security grounds. This is yet to be officially announced.

The Indian government has been quite wary of awarding any new technology business in mission critical and high security segment to any of the Chinese companies, especially after the Galwan face-off. In addition, there have also been confirmed reports of attempts by China to hack into Indian servers and access highly confidential data belonging to the Indian government as well as classified defence documents.

For the Indian government, while China raises security issues, it is also against the spirit of the Atma Nirbhar program of the government. The Atma Nirbhar program is all about indigenization of production. The US has already called for a global ban on use of Huawei equipment by countries. Huawei is most likely to feature in the embargo list for purchase of telecom equipment. Apart from Huawei, China-based ZTE Corp could also be embargoed.
