Investment in Indian real estate by global institutions fell 12% to $4.48 billion (Rs.33,800 crore) in fiscal year 2019-20. This was partially due to fears over emerging market assets and partly due to the Coronavirus pandemic, which started rearing its head around January this year. The sharpest fall came in the fourth quarter when institutional investments in real estate dropped 44% to $727 million. This is the lowest level in the last five fiscal years. Nearly 81% of these investments were in commercial realty with Mumbai, Bengaluru and Pune accounting for 90% of the total investment in real estate. The US-based investors accounted for 67% share of the total flows.
