Do you see the EMI moratorium being extended beyond August? There are rumours of the moratorium being extended to December 31?

Yes. In the recent press conference meeting, RBI announced the new extension date. It is now rolled for more than 3 months 31st August 2020. This made it a total of 6 months of the moratorium of loan EMI i.e., March 1st - August 31st.

As of now is speculative but let us look at what the experts are saying on this subject. For example, the SBI chairman Rajnish Kumar believes that moratorium may not be required beyond August 31, although some sectors may still be stressed. He has pointed to sectors like aviation, tourism, hotel, gems and jewellery as likely support candidates.

Mr. Kumar also affirmed that retail borrowers were largely hesitant to increase their liability and have been repaying on time. Corporates borrowers opted for moratorium only to preserve cash. Kumar also said that the 6-month moratorium on repayment of loans was almost equivalent to restructuring. He admitted that extensions may be selective, at best.

As per many experts, it's likely not to go beyond Aug-sept 2020 so no way will be extended to December 31.
