For the Sep-20 quarter, Bharti Airtel did report a widening of losses, but there were a lot of positive takeaways from the results in business terms. The focus was more on business growth in the telecom segment than about pure numbers alone.

Bharti Airtel reported losses of Rs.763 crore for the Sep-20 quarter but it still had some distinct reasons to be happy. There were some real positive cues from the business perspective that was evident in the numbers. Here is a look some of them.

For starters, the sales revenues of Bharti Airtel for the Sep-20 quarter grew 25% yoy to Rs.28,785 crore for the quarter. This is an all time quarterly record in the history of Bharti Airtel and has been achieved in the midst of a very tough quarter.

The average revenue per user or ARPU in the mobile business saw a sharp surge from Rs.128 to Rs.162 on a yoy basis. Even on a month on month or even a qoq basis, the ARPUs were sharply higher by about Rs.10 and that is a signal of sustainable profits.

That is not all as far as good news is concerned. In addition, the company added a record 1.4 crore 4G customers during the month. This has taken the total 4G customer base for Bharti Airtel to 15.27 crore. This makes Bharti and Jio the two formidable competitors in the game.

Bharti has already paid more than 10% of the AGR dues and is on target to repay fully in the next 10 years as allowed by the Court. The EBIT margin of 17% was nearly 300 basis points higher than the last few quarters. Bharti may have seen loses widening but post COVID business numbers are surely encouraging.
