In short it was a flattering set of numbers reported by Hindustan Unilever, at least if you look at the very robust rural story. Urban India may still have pockets of problems to worry about in terms of FMCG demand.

Coming to the actual numbers, Hindustan Unilever reported 9% growth in Q2 net profit of Rs.2009 crore, on the back of very robust performance in rural markets despite demand in urban pockets being muted. Revenues were up by a whopping 16% at Rs.11,276 crore, with contribution from volumes and pricing power.

The big driver for the performance of Hindustan Unilever was the HHN troika consisting of Health, Hygiene and Nutrition, which grew double digits. In the post pandemic scenario, these segments to do with hygiene and health foods have really taken off in a big way.

While operations were not impacted at HUL, it surely supplied from shortage of labour and constraints in the supply chain movements. According to the CEO, the growth was specifically commendable in the light of the challenging economic environment in the aftermath of COVID-19.

The company also declared an interim dividend of Rs.14 per share, higher than the normal years. However, the pandemic did impact specific categories like laundry products and out-of-home products; where demand was contingent on people travelling out of homes.
