One of the more active agri commodities in the commodity futures market, both in terms of volumes and open interest is Black Pepper. Black Pepper is popularly called the “King of Spices” and predominantly grows in the Southern part of India. Apart from India, black pepper is also grown in Southeast Asia, Brazil and Madagascar. Globally, Black Pepper accounts for over 35% of the global spices traded and hence are an important futures commodity. India is one of the major pepper re-export market in the world. It imports pepper from Vietnam, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Most of this pepper is then re-exported as Whole Black Pepper to other countries. Part of this pepper is also converted into pepper powder and sold across retail outlets. Within India, Kerala and Karnataka on the West Coast are the two major producers of Black Pepper.
