You are right that the Indian government has banned another 47 Chinese apps on Monday. But that was more because these 47 apps were apparently functioning as clones of the 59 apps that were banned earlier. Earlier, it may be recollected, India had banned 59 Chinese apps including Tik Tok, Cam Scanner, UC Browser etc.

Even these 47 additional apps were banned on grounds of national security and privacy, although the names of these apps have not been released. Most apps were apparently, having names, functionalities and operational ethics similar to the 59 banned Chinese apps. Indian government is currently reviewing nearly 275 Chinese apps for security violations.

Some of these clone apps had come under the scanner after they saw millions of downloads in India post the ban on 59 apps announced late last month. For example, Xiaomi’s Zili app has emerged as an alternative to TikTok. Indian apps have also seen some increase in downloads but they are yet to match up to Chinese apps in terms of popularity.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, had issued an interim order on 29 June that the 59 apps were engaged in activities prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India and its strategic defence establishments. The banned apps were given 3-weeks time to respond, failing which they would be banned permanently.
